The Vancouver Airport Authority has an opportunity for a permanent, full-time Mechanical Engineer or
Technical Specialist, Mechanical in the Engineering Services Department. Reporting to the Manager,
Engineering Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing in-house mechanical
estimating, design and project planning support for the Engineering and Maintenance departments. The
successful candidate will also provide oversight on the design and installation of mechanical systems
(plumbing, sprinkler, HVAC, storm drainage) for projects on Airport Authority lands.

• Assist project managers/land development group in developing mechanical objectives and first order
estimating for new projects
• Participate in consultant selection for mechanical consultants on projects
• Participate in meetings with project managers and designers to discuss the proposed design, existing
facilities/systems, best practices, and mechanical standards
• Review preliminary mechanical design drawings to ensure they are consistent with best practices for our
facilities and that they are consistent with discussions about the project
• Review facility permit drawings for compliance with mechanical code requirements and design intent
• Review facility permit drawings for compliance with mechanical code requirements and design intent
• Monitor construction to ensure the facility permit conditions are being met for mechanical design
• Provide mechanical advice and recommendations on code requirements and interpretations

Key qualifications include: Key qualifications include:
• Completion of undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science
• At least four years’ professional experience (P. Eng) or a mechanical technologist with extensive design
and field experience who is in the process of getting a “Limited License” in mechanical design from the
Association of Professional Engineers of BC
• Knowledge of airport operations, aircraft and/or the aviation industry is preferred
• Knowledge of municipal, provincial and national codes (plumbing, gas, fire protection and building codes)
• Knowledge of ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA design and installation standards
• Knowledge of construction industry best practices and standards
• Extensive knowledge on mechanical systems design and equipment
• Knowledge of building code, plumbing code and referenced standards
• Good report writing and presentation skills
• Good communication and negotiation skills
• Strong computer skills including MS Office package
