We are looking to add to our Vancouver International Airport (YVR) team in Canada. Positions are available for senior wildlife biologists to be trained as Site Manager and Assistant Site Manager and for wildlife biologists to be part of our committed team of Wildlife Management Technicians. For these positions, successful applicants will possess excellent knowledge of birdlife and have the ability to assist with wildlife hazard mitigation.
Senior Wildlife Biologist This position requires strong leadership, organizational and inter-personal skills as you will be responsible for managing a large team of staff and subcontractors and liaising directly with our client. This is a demanding role, requiring you to perform all the duties of the Wildlife Biologists and be available for on call and weekend work. In return we offer an attractive salaried position which provides the opportunity for learning and career development. Initially, you will undergo a period of training in wildlife risk mitigation to learn the essential requirements of the YVR program.
Wildlife Biologist Our Wildlife Management staff are required to operate around runways, taxiways and surrounding areas using radio communications. The role involves dispersing and managing wildlife populations from a busy airfield environment. Work schedules cover 7 days a week, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. There are fulltime and part time roles available.
Selection Criteria - Essential Skills and Attributes Senior Wildlife Biologist / Wildlife Biologist
1. Excellent people manager 2. Excellent communicator – written and oral 3. Ability to train and mentor staff 4. Ability to meet all requirements of the Wildlife Biologist position
1. Demonstrated skill in wildlife identification, particularly local birds 2. Demonstrated ability to use problem solving techniques to safely and effectively harass and disperse wildlife from the aerodrome and adjacent habitat 3. Situational awareness particularly in relation to identifying safety considerations involving aircraft movement, wildlife presence, and the activity of other vehicles, equipment and people utilizing the airport 4. Demonstrated experience in the handling, operation and maintenance of firearms 5. Current class 5 drivers license and ability to follow safe vehicle operation and traffic procedures for aerodromes 6. Computer literacy and ability to maintain electronic records 7. A strong commitment to safety and safe work practices and a willingness to promote Avisure’s safety culture 8. Genuine interest in birds, wildlife and animal behavior and experience in outdoor/field work, particularly in association with the aviation industry.
Desirable skills and attributes Senior Wildlife Biologist / Wildlife Biologist
1. Experience working on wildlife strike mitigation programs 2. Ability to meet all requirements of the Wildlife Biologist position
1. Higher education qualification in wildlife biology/ecology/conservation or equivalent experience 2. Ability to acquire an unrestricted PAL 3. Ability to acquire a Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC) – requires criminal record checks 4. Aircraft Radio/Telephone Operators Proficiency 5. Ability to acquire D-AVOP 6. Standard First Aid certification 7. Experience/qualifications in animal behavior, and/or dog training 8. Experience/license in use and maintenance of small watercraft.
