A highly challenging permanent positionin the Corporate Safety department exists at AIR CANADA, one of the world’s major International Airlines
This position reports to the Manager, Flight Data Services - CS (Corporate Safety) and carries responsibility for the internal development, programming and operation of all Flight Data Analysis (FDA) hardware, reporting tools and software products.  He/she will direct and manage these tools and related software, to ensure complete, timely and accurate reporting and stats development concerning the Air Canada Fleet(s) of aircraft. As a key functionality of this position, the incumbent will conduct comprehensive flight data analysis duties, identifying operational hazards, risks and best practices and deliver tailored presentations to pilots and management on their findings.  The incumbent will develop appropriate awareness of all FDA products, as well as all required software training and development ofapplications, to “push” safety data to crews via formal debriefings, online sessions and via tablet and iPad technologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Responsible for utilization and development of company FDA assets.
  • Assume responsibilities for assigned FDA fleets and conduct data capture, assessment and analysis on a daily basis.
  • Process Fleet flight data and identify adverse trends and safety issues, notifying Air Canada Maintenance of issues requiring further review.
  • Provide detailed comprehensive briefings, including recommendations and suggested operational improvements to Senior Management, Fleet Manager and others concerning FDA findings, risks and concerns.
  • Manage all IT software resources within the FDA laboratory, including all computer systems, software and set-ups. Monitor all systems and processes to ensure system operations and integrity with the FDA Program.
  • Develop unique software applications and improvements to enhance the FDA Program
  • Develop and manage unique weekly, monthly, quarterly and ongoing FDA system reports – tailored to the needs of Air Canada’s Flight Operations, Maintenance Operations and third party clients.
  • Coordinate and where necessary, provide direct IT and software support and training to third party staff.
  • Maintain a capability to respond to short notice tasks for data analysis and maintenance reviews in order to prevent unnecessary aircraft downtime and operational delays.
  • Assist the Manager, FDS in developing tailored Flight Data Solutions for internal and external clients.
  • Maintain daily contact with Managed Service Vendor’s staff regarding data processed for AC, and oversee their actions and findings, auditing and ensuring the quality of the vendor’s work on an ongoing basis.
  • Develop Flight Safety Awareness products – charts, presentations, articles, etc.
  • Develop unique products to “push” FDA safety and awareness materials to flight crews. Use tablet and iPad technologies to permit pilots to request data and FDA support as well to provide FDA feedback to crews.
  • Participate with Industry, Regulatory Agencies and Star Partners re FDA efforts, improvements, practices and operations.
Candidate Profile
Note:  This is a Flight Safety position, first and foremost.  Candidates must therefore have experience in Flight Data Analysis for purposes of Flight Safety within the airline industry.  A sole background in IT will not meet our required qualifications.
  • Extensive training and experience in Flight Data Analysis, including use of playback tools, plus a comprehensive understanding of Logical Frame layouts, DAR/QAR resources and flight animation recreations is mandatory.
  • University degree or Advanced College Diploma in Computer Science is highly desired.
  • Licenses: - An aviation industry professional license such as an airline pilot license, flight engineer or AME license, or military equivalent, is preferred. Alternatively, management experience operating an airline Flight Safety/Flight Data Analysis Department will offer parallel skills suitable for this position.  Complete fluency in English.  Spoken French or a second language is an asset.
  • Management experience within a Part 705 Canadian Air Operator or equivalent. This ideally shall include project management oversight.
  • Must have a full understanding of computer networks, systems and server operations. Demonstrated ability to quickly master unique and complicated Aviation software suites. Must understand and have proven experience with flight data traces, raw engineering data and be able to relate this information to flight events and parameters.
  • Minimum of 3 years operational management experience with a Part 704/705 Canadian Air Operator, applicable Government Department or a foreign International carrier in two or more of the following: Flight Operations, Flight Safety, Flight Dispatch, In-Flight Services, Airports, Maintenance, Cargo or Security.
  • Minimum of 2 years operational experience managing an approved Flight Safety Program with emphasis on management or operation of a Flight Data Monitoring Program.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian Aviation Regulations and Commercial Air Services Standards, ICAO Annexes, FARs, Star Alliance Best Practices and JAR-Ops with specific applications regarding Flight Safety. In-depth knowledge of 705 operations. 
  • Proven superior interpersonal skills, writing skills and leadership capabilities.
Position location:  Mississauga, Ontario
Compensation: $75,000 to $80,000
