EVENT—Hike to TCA810 / Mt. Slesse Memorial – British
Columbia
Please join us on Monday, September 14th for a hike to the
crash site of Trans-Canada Airlines flight 810. This aircraft was a
Northstar lost in 1956 after CFIT with Mt. Slesse. From someone who has
done this hike several times before, you can expect it to provide good
exercise, great scenery, a good history lesson, good 4x4 driving, and good team
building. It will give us a chance to pay respect to aviators who did not
have the benefit of the technology that we have today. Following are
links to some information:
We will be meeting early on
the day of the hike at a supermarket in Chilliwack. That way if anyone
has forgotten anything they need for the hike they will have a last chance to
get it. The exact time and location will be determined about a week
before the hike.
If you are interested in
participating, please email mikezaytsoff@collegeofpilots.ca.
To do this hike we need high clearance 4x4 vehicles for the logging road that
leads to the trailhead. If you can help provide one it would be greatly
appreciated.
Unlike accidents today, much
of the wreckage still remains at this site. This was a result of the
difficult terrain and accident investigations of the time. Removal of
even small pieces of wreckage may seem innocuous but the families of the
victims consider it grave robbing so it is requested all the wreckage be left
as it was found.
