Job Description Position Overview

Aircraft Fire Fighting requires members to work as a team in a safe, efficient manner and provide a fire-free evacuation area for passengers and crew following an aircraft accident. Fire Fighters respond to emergencies where life, property or the environment is at risk.



Annual recertification and medical assessments are required.
A valid passport is necessary, as travel outside of Canada is a requirement.
Fire Fighter 2 is a union position reporting to the Crew Captain. The Level 2 Fire Fighter works a 19-hour shift on a rotation that averages 40 hours weekly.

Education & Experience
Complete all of the elements of Fire Fighter Level 1 certification within six months of employment and be a proven, competent team member.

Knowledge
Knowledge of Victoria airport airside operations and plans,TP312, and the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
Knowledge of the operation of heavy-duty equipment relating to snow removal, pavement and grounds maintenance.

Abilities
 Ability to take control and make critical decisions in emergencies.
 Ability to stay alert, be coordinated and have the physical stamina and personal suitability to respond to emergencies under stressful, urgent or hazardous conditions.
 Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, with internal and external customers.
 Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgment, and work as a positive and collaborative team member.
 Organization skills and ability to meet deadlines with conflicting demands.
 Enthusiastic, energetic, and the ability to be a self starter and work independently.
 Competent computer skills and ability to use a wide variety of software packages.
 Ability to use heavy duty equipment relating to snow removal, pavement and grounds maintenance.
 Mechanical aptitude.
 Willingness to learn new technology.
 Willingness and ability to travel out of country for training and conferences.

Security
Must maintain enhanced Airport security clearance.

Duties
 Respond to all airport emergency situations and medical calls.
 Control birds and wildlife.
 Participate in the development, planning, training and implementation of operational procedures, emergency procedures and exercises.
 Participate in Public Awareness and Education Programs.
 Assist with hydrant maintenance, flow testing, winterizing and removal of obstructions.
 Assist in the enforcement and training of the AVOP program.
 Perform routine maintenance, minor repairs and housekeeping duties for the firehall and equipment.
 Clean up after hazardous spills and incidents; completing incident reports.
 Conduct safety and fire prevention inspections.
 Conduct runway, taxiway and airside pavement inspections.
 Perform safety related maintenance duties.
 Participate in Winter Operations duties including: o Plowing and sweeping airside and groundside surfaces; o Snow and ice removal using chemicals, materials and power equipment; o Restocking and supplying winter operations materials.
 Ensure all regulations, documentation and procedures are followed.
 Complete all required documentation, both written and digital and ensure it is communicated to appropriate personnel or agencies.
 Participate in public related safety and wellness initiatives.
 Assume additional administrative and project work.
 Take personal responsibility for VAA’s Safety Management System, safety related issues and integrate safety into daily work activities.
 Acting as crew captain qualification as a level 2 Fire Fighter and three years of airport experience.  Other related duties.
