Job Summary

The Public Safety Officer (PSO) role is dedicated to supporting public safety concerns at YVR - 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The PSO is responsible for surveying the public areas for security and safety issues. These areas include the International Terminal Building (ITB), the Domestic Terminal Building (DTB), curbside areas of these terminals, plus Canada Line public areas and the parkade.

In order to perform the task of maintaining a safe and smooth running daily operation at YVR, the PSO required to practice a calm and respectful manner and when necessary use negotiation skills to de-escalation conflicts with non physical intervention.

Job Duties 
  • Conduct regular patrols of all public areas of the ITB and DTB, in constant search for trespassers, vagrants, and individuals suspected of criminal activity.
  • Utilize negotiation skills and judgments to de-escalate situations, always maintaining non-physical intervention.
  • Enlist, when necessary, the assistance of the RCMP when faced with a potential endangerment to the security and safety of customers or employees. This may include assault, theft, threatening behavior, loud and abusive language, or public nuisance.
  • In accordance with the Trespass Notice Program, remove persons from the Airport property who are engaging in activities that are determined to be prohibited by the YVR Airport Authority. These activities include, but are not limited to: solicitation, loitering, causing a disturbance, vagrancy. Issue Trespass Notices or verbal warnings as required.
  • Respond to operational requirements as dispatched by the Airport Operations Centre (YVR Ops) or the Security Operations Centre (SOC), including but not limited to: vagrants, intoxicated individuals, public disturbances.
  • Monitor public area retail stores for suspicious activities and report specifics to the Operations Centre.
  • Report unattended baggage to the Security Operations Centre (SOC), secure the area if required, and then await the assistance of a Securiguard patroller.
  • Identify and remedy potentially unsafe situations and communicate such events and resolution to the YVR Operations Centre.
  • Attend to incidents post-security only when requested by SOC, by the Security Supervisor, or YVR Ops.
  • P roactively seek out and address the concerns of passengers in need of assistance. Provide timely intervention, sound analysis, and conflict resolution skills to achieve customer care.
  • Assist the Terminal Duty Officer (TDO) in responding, when directed, to situations including but not limited to: washroom alarms, medical calls, intoxicated individuals and security breaches.
  • Provide ongoing security risk and threat assessments, and report potential risks or concerns to the day of operations staff. 
  • Communicate incidents and issues in a timely matter, if there is potential to negatively impact normal airport operations. This may include congestion involving passenger queuing at check-in counters, congestion at security points, or building maintenance issues
