Director of Training / Chief Flight Instructor (DT/CFI)
The Victoria
Flying Club, located at the Victoria International Airport, has been training
world class professional and recreational pilots since 1946. Local and
international students benefit from top‐ notch instruction on a standardized
fleet of Cessna 172S model aircraft, at one of Canada’s busiest airports, and
in a varied terrain setting, providing an unsurpassed training environment year
round.

The Director of Training and Chief Flight
Instructor reports to the General Manager. The role includes responsibility for
the development and maintenance of VFC’s flight and ground training programs
adding structured flight training to VFC’s established modular training system.
Emphasis will be on developing and maintaining the syllabus for each training
program, overseeing the content and delivery of lesson plans, preparatory
ground briefings, ground school, examination preparations and overall flight
and ground instructional quality. The DT/CFI will carry out duties as described
in the Canadian Aviation Regulations 426.22 and will manage VFC’s team of
fifteen flight instructors.
• Training Program Development
·
Oversee the development and maintenance of VFC's ground and flight
training programs, progressively adding elements of structured flight training
to VFCs established modular training system
·
Oversee the development and maintenance of a training syllabus for
each training program (private, commercial, multi‐engine, instrument,
instructor, float, night and VFR OTT)
·
Oversee the development and maintenance of a series of structured
lesson plans for ground, flight and simulator lessons
·
Oversee the development and maintenance of, or access to, suitable
support material including reference material, ground school resources and
preparatory lesson briefing material
·
Develop a system and process for tracking flight training,
identifying and implementing remedial actions applied to students, instructors
and continuously improving the course material
·
Develop and implement long‐term goals and objectives to achieve
the successful outcome of each program
·
Develop a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of
the program and to identify areas for improvement
·
Ensure that each program complies with all relevant CARS,
legislation and professional standards
Staff Management
·
Recruit and manage a team of flight instructors
·
Oversee the training and coaching of flight instructors,
participating personally to the extent necessary to ensure a high quality
result
·
Develop and maintain flight instruction policies and standards
·
Ensure all flight instructors receive orientation and appropriate
training in accordance with organizational standards
·
Supervise training by providing direction, input and feedback
Management Team Activities
·
Work under the direction of the General Manager alongside others
on the management team to maintain a set of shared goals and co‐ordinate
efforts towards attaining those goals
·
Take direction from the General Manager and Board of Directors
·
Contribute to the development of inter‐departmental processes as
required or directed. As one of many examples, develop and maintain a process
where dispatchers may identify a proposed pilot mission that constitutes a
higher than average risk, and provide them a means to involve an instructor in
the mitigation of the risk.

General
• Ensure that
safety is always the highest job, departmental and company priority

duties as described in the Canadian Aviation Regulations 426.22 and 426.14
personally where required, but most often by delegation to staff, support
systems or others in the organization
• Maintain a
strong working knowledge of all applicable parts of the Canadian Aviation
Regulations
• Work alongside
operational staff to ensure that VFC resource utilization including fleet
utilization is optimized
• Develop and
maintain a good working knowledge of the FleetCaptain operational support
system (training will be provided)
• Maintain
personal qualifications as required to perform CFI duties
• Work with
marketing personnel to best position VFC training strengths in promotions and
marketing efforts
Member Services
• Aim to
continuously raise the number of hours flown on VFC aircraft each year, by
providing the best training and membership experience possible
• Act as a
resource to VFC members who present or escalate problems or desire assistance
Together with the General Manager, establish, maintain and enforce policies and
procedures
• Oversee student
access to flight tests, language proficiency tests, written tests, and
licensing services
External
• Act as a
primary VFC interface to Transport Canada (CAR 406)
• Liaise with the
Victoria Airport Authority as required to ensure smooth operations at the
airport and in the surrounding airspace
• Liaise with
NavCanada as required to ensure a smooth working relationship with ATC
Represent VFC on matters of community interest (for example noise complaints)
Qualifications:
•Class 1 Flight Instructor
•Valid Class 1 Medical
•Must be able to meet all Canadian
Aviation Regulations 426 requirements for Chief Flight
Instructor
