Job Title: Peer Tutor – Writing
Job Type: Part time
employment for BCIT students
Start Date: October 2016
Wage: $14.03/hour
Location: Aerospace
Technology Campus Library
Peer tutors support the writing and
communication development of BCIT students. If
you welcome and enjoy opportunities to help others learn, peer tutoring
could be a rewarding experience for you. Tutoring will take place
in the Study Rooms of the ATC Library, 2-4 hours
week. The schedule can be flexible,
including on an ‘on-call’ basis. Training will be provided.
Benefits of peer tutoring include the opportunity to:
·
enhance career-related skills, such as
client-service skills, communication skills,
leadership skills, and teamwork skills
·
learn more about writing and presentation strategies
·
work on campus
·
gain a communication-related job reference
·
meet new people and be part of an
academic-support community
·
help other students
Job requirements are excellent
communication and interpersonal skills, strong academic standing, and a
reference from an instructor. The ideal candidate will collaborate well with
peers, have earned a high level of achievement, and be capable of assisting
peers with areas of writing that may include technical, business,
professional, and academic. Writing tutors also help peers prepare students
for oral presentations.
To be eligible for funding, you must be a current BCIT student and
be legally entitled to work in Canada. If you are interested in helping other
students learn, this position could be for you.
The Writing Centre supports the
writing development of BCIT students in a one-to-one student- tutor setting. Our goal is to help students develop
the capacity to plan, organize, write, and revise various types of assignments (written and
oral), and assist in areas such as ESL and citation. We also help students
prepare for oral presentations and the like when requested.
While Centre tutors will help
students work out strategies for writing problems, they will not proofread,
edit or develop topic ideas.
See http://www.bcit.ca/learningcommons/writing.shtml for more
information about the Writing Centre service.
Key duties of the Writing Centre
Tutor are to guide students by assessing their writing and presentation
needs, developing a plan for improvement of their work, and encouraging good communication practices.
Participation in training during scheduled work time and occasional, paid training workshops outside of scheduled work
time is also required.
Tutors advise the coordinator at
the start of each term how many hours per week they would like to
work, generally between 2 -4 hours per week, spread over 1-2 days. A schedule
is then set for the term so tutors know in advance when they
are scheduled to tutor. At ATC, tutors
can opt for an on-call system, whereby they only have to come for a shift if
students have made an appointment 24 hours in advance.
Tutors are paid $14.03/hour.
To be considered for an interview, please contact Jeff Verbeem,
ATC Librarian / Writing Centre
Coordinator, at learningcommons@bcit.ca or visit the Library at
ATC and talk to Lori or Hagar.
