Senior Category Specialist (Airport Operations) – Operations Strategic Procurement 

Reporting to the Sr. Manager of Strategic Procurement, the ideal candidate will bring proven procurement experience as it relates to contracting, strategic sourcing, category management, supplier management and internal guest relationship development focused in the areas of airport operations, including aircraft ground handling (passenger and ramp services), cargo warehouse handling, aircraft security (AVSEC), persons with reduced mobility (PRM), and ground service equipment (GSE). The successful candidate will effectively manage the assigned strategic categories, collaborate with the Airport and Technical Operation departments for this area of operational spend, and constantly challenge the status quo to find opportunities to drive additional value to WestJet.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead, drive, develop, maintain, oversee and foster internal guest relationships at all levels of the organization, collaborate supply strategies, ensure supply needs are consistently met and resolve supplier issues as required.
  • Mentor and lead a team consisting of category specialists in the airport operations / ground handling categories.
  • Use WestJet’s eSourcing tool to drive strategic sourcing RFx activities, including development of scope, spend analysis, negotiating, contract writing, risk mitigation, and supplier recommendation.
  • Drive and support the ongoing management of existing contracts within the assigned categories, including contract amendments, scope revisions and adjustments to pricing and commercial terms to ensure compliance with WestJet’s CSox requirements.
  • Drive, develop, maintain and oversee a supplier relationship management program with key suppliers including hosting business review meetings, developing metrics, performance goals and improvement initiatives to ensure optimum supplier performance.
  • Use procurement experience, judgment and industry knowledge to develop and implement global procurement strategies necessary to ensure an ongoing supply of quality, cost-effective products and services within the assigned categories.
  • Utilize spend analysis tools to drive strategic alignment with key suppliers and optimize the supply base to create additional supply chain value to WestJet.
  • Drive the collection, synthesis, communication and feedback of procurement performance metrics against pre-determined performance standards.
  • Drive and report Procurement Key Performance Indicators, such as, cost improvement, contract spend and spend under management.
  • Collaborate with procurement team members to create, drive and implement initiatives to improve efficiency and effectiveness of departmental processes.
  • Analyze industry related trends to ensure WestJet’s competitiveness within the assigned categories.
  • Ensure compliance to all Procurement policies and procedures.

Qualifications / Required skillsets:
  • Minimum of five years of strategic procurement experience with overall procurement experience of minimum ten years;
  • Strong professional communication, time management and interpersonal skills;
  • Advanced negotiation and contracting skills, including contract writing, service level development, organizational and problem solving skills and effectively influencing others;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and delegate effectively;
  • Airline industry knowledge / airport operational experience in aircraft ground handling, including passenger and ramp handling, cargo warehouse services, AVSEC, PRM, and GSE an asset;
  • Knowledge of the IATA Standard Ground Handling Agreements (SGHA) Annex B, Service Level Agreements, Master Service Agreements and other service agreements an asset;
  • Thorough understanding of supply chain levers and category management as it pertains to the procurement of ground handling services;
  • Strong change management skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to drive a collaborative and effective team environment;
  • Knowledge with online eSourcing and spend analysis programs an asset;
  • Team player with the ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment;
  • Leadership, project management, strategic thinking, supplier management, strategic sourcing knowledge and experience;
  • Advanced computer skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Business degree or equivalent an asset;
  • SCMP designation or equivalent an asset.
