The Organization

The Opportunity 
Reporting to the Manager, Environment & Emergency Response Services, the Environmental Specialist is responsible for the development, maintenance and implementation of environmental plans, procedures and processes that meet or exceed applicable legislation, reduce environmental risk and support sustainability.

Responsibilities include: 
  • Develop, implement and maintain procedures and processes that meet or exceed applicable legislation;
  • Monitor and assess compliance with environmental regulations, permits, licenses, tenant leases and airport requirements;
  • Monitor the environment for signs of negative impact from airport operations and development;
  • Develop environmental and sustainability guidelines, specifications and manuals;
  • Conduct environmental audits, appraisals and investigations;
  • Monitor, analyze and respond to community noise disturbance reports;
  • Utilize various systems and software to record, interpret and analyze environmental data; and
  • Develop and review environmental reports.
Selection Criteria include: 
  • Graduate from a post-secondary institution, specializing in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or related studies;
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the environmental industry;
  • Experience in environmental monitoring and investigations;
  • Experience with technical writing and development of plans and procedures;
  • Airport-related experience and project management experience would be considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, compliance and environmental management systems;
  • Knowledge of impacted and contaminated sites management;
  • Knowledge of construction environmental management and sustainable design;
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills;
  • Exceptional analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail;
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent record keeping ability;
  • Ability to interpret design drawings;
  • Superb technology skills using Microsoft Office and database applications;
  • Ability to obtain an Airport Vehicle Operators Permit; and
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license.
Condition of employment is the ability to obtain and maintain an Airport Restricted Area Identification Card.
