The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager of Airfield Operations, the Airfield Maintenance Specialist maintains and repairs all aircraft operation surfaces. This role assists in providing a safe environment for our aircraft, the travelling public and cargo at our 24 hour operation.

Responsibilities include:
  • Maintain and repair all aircraft operating surfaces including by not limited to security fencing, gates, signage, roadways, painting of markings, landscaping, snow/removal, and wildlife control;
  • Operate heavy and or medium sized equipment on active and inactive runways in close proximity of other equipment;
  • Running maintenance and minor repairs on equipment;
  • Application of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals at application rates prescribed by others;
  • Ability to maintain radio contact and operate under radio direction with the foreman and air traffic controllers;
  • Carry out ice control on roads, parking and service areas within the Winnipeg Airports Authority; and
  • Provide support to the airport emergency services in areas of crowd control, shuttling services, clearing access ways in event of an emergency.
Selection Criteria include:
  • Must have a valid Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brake endorsement;
  • Maintain restricted radio/telephone license;
  • Maintain Airport Vehicle Operator Permit “D” (AVOP);
  • Ability to acquire a Possession Acquisition License (PAL);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the operation and repair of airport winter and summer maintenance equipment;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety practices and procedures;
  • Ability to assess and evaluate the operational condition of equipment;
  • Minimum of 3 winters experience in the operation of heavy equipment and airport experience;
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the operation of heavy equipment;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WAA Airfield Operations;
  • Physically able to perform manual labour as required (lifting/pushing weight up to 50lbs, walking and shoveling snow and/or gravel as required);
  • Ability to occasionally work with pesticides and herbicides;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Effective interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to prepare basic reports and use MS Office Suite;
  • Ability to work shift work; and
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
Condition of employment is the ability to obtain and maintain an Airport Restricted Area Identification Card.
