SMS Coordinator - YVR

We have a permanent, full-time opportunity for a Safety Management System (SMS) Coordinator in the Airport Capacity and Systems Design team. Reporting to the Director, Airside Operations, the successful candidate will provide support to the SMS program by administering the program, identifying and communicating safety trends, and ensuring documentation is current to enable quick action and resolution on safety related reporting.

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Assisting in the development and implementation of SMS standards to safety critical programs; this includes:
    • Meeting with departmental managers to review program documentation to ensure it is compliant with the Authority’s SMS and safety best practices
    • Assisting in the determination of how directives should be rewritten to best articulate safety specific elements or whether processes should be changed in situations where programs are not compliant/meeting safety needs
  • Support development and review of operational processes to ensure they meet established safety needs and the Airport’s SMS program
  • Ensure completeness and compliance with SMS program standards and Transport Canada requirements
  • Work flowing safety reports to the appropriate parties for resolution
  • Tracking and trending safety data to summarize issues and areas of concern, presenting it to management and initiating action where appropriate
  • Presenting data, trends and audit documentation to oversight committees and Transport Canada
  • Provide education and training on safety management system and programs in place at YVR to internal and external stakeholders
  • Supporting Airport Operations in irregular and emergency situations, including Winter Operations

Key qualifications include: 

  • 2 years of recent, related experience, supplemented by a bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Proven organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, along with conflict resolution and mediation skills with the ability to maintain diplomacy
  • Solid negotiation skills in order to assist program managers whose directives need to be rewritten and/or whose processes need to be changed
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to provide solutions and recommendations
