Airport Technician - Arctic Canadian

 Reporting to the Superintendent Materials Management & Logistics, the Airport Technician is responsible for providing technical aeronautical support for all aviation requirements at the Ekati site. This position is responsible for tracking and communicating all weather observations functions and for the effective communication to pertinent parties requiring this information. The Successful Candidate will possess a technical certification in an Observers Communication Program with a valid Aeronautical Radio License and Transport Canada certified Radio Operator. Knowledge in Arctic Environment Services or northern community aerodrome operations and a site certified weather observer/communicator is considered an asset.

The role is well-suited for an informal leader who can work independently to drive results with minimal supervision. This position is site-based and requires successful incumbent to work in a remote worksite in the Arctic on a regular shift rotation. The current shift rotation is three weeks on, three weeks off .


Job Duties/Responsibilities

The Airport Technician is responsible for:

  • Monitor/Operate both air and ground frequencies
  • Communicate pertinent information to pilots including weather changes and PIREPS
  • Monitor & inspect Non-Directional Beacon daily
  • Perform weather observations on the hour (and as required); forward to all parties requiring the information
  • Complete daily Runway Surface Condition reports (JBI) in advance for all incoming air traffic and report any deficiencies to Supervisor and Maintenance groups
  • Assist pilots with any weather requests
  • Provide any information requested from flight crews such as passenger information and baggage weights in final reports
  • Monitor runway and airside throughout the shift and report any wildlife in the area to environment department
  • Pass on all pertinent information to airlines that require information on departures and arrivals of their aircraft
  • Provide incoming flight updates to Travel Coordinators, Logistics and the Bus Drivers for efficient coordination of arrival and departures
  • Complete all proper documentation and report when IROPS occurs
  • Complete monthly safety checks and submit report to Supervisor
  • Complete any general house cleaning duties and report any deficiencies to supervisor
  • Pass on any airport deficiencies and issue NOTAMS as required, informing the supervisor.
  • Respond to all aircraft emergencies on and off airport and complete all duties that are required as per the Local Station Procedures and the Ekati Airport Emergency Action Plan
  • Assist Travel Coordinator’s in their duties on non-fly days once all required daily tasks are complete
  • Attend safety meetings and complete A Personal Safety Card daily
  • Provide thorough handover written report including any outstanding items related to daily airport operations as well as your regular arriving and departing aircraft and any related information prior to shifting out

Education/Experience

  • Knowledge and understanding of Transport Canada’s CARS/NAV Canada regulations
  • Environment Canada Aviation Weather & ability to read and interpret weather reporting and forecasts an asset
  • Ability to influence others and drive continuous improvement without direct report control
  • Emotional intelligence: Influences others, listens openly, negotiates, and resolves disagreements, is cooperative and collaborative
  • Ability to problem solve and remain calm under pressure
  • Working knowledge of SAP and strong computer literacy with willingness to learn new computer skills

The Company provides travel to and from the Ekati mine site out of Calgary, Yellowknife, and other Northern fly points as indicated in the NWT Socio-Economic Agreement for the Ekati mine.
