Airport Maintenance Operator (s) II - Up to 4 temporary, full-time opportunities (approximately 5 months) are available at the Region of Waterloo International Airport, to assist in the maintenance of the grounds, facilities and equipment of the airport. This will include performing a variety of activities for the maintenance of airport structures and buildings, as well as grounds maintenance and landscaping. These positions involve lifting equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 kg, frequently using power and hand tools, and working outside approximately 80% of the time.
You will be required to work variable shifts and hours throughout a 7-day week, including weekends and statutory holidays.
The responsibilities of the Airport Maintenance Operator II will include:
•Maintaining, inspecting and repairing fences, as well as setting up and removing temporary fences.
•Maintaining, repairing, and ensuring proper operation of gates.
•Ensuring that signs installed on the airport are maintained in readable condition.
•Performing control and removal of foreign objects from the airport.
•Operating an aviation radio and maintaining contact with air traffic control and/or aviation traffic.
•Providing radio escorts to all airside facilities.
•Conducting detailed airfield condition inspections, reporting any deficiencies, occurrences and/or adverse conditions, and initiating or recommending corrective action.
•Operating tractors with attachments.
•Clearing snow and ice.
•Assisting with special events on airport site.
•Assisting in providing necessary airport security.
•Providing emergency response, as required.
•Performing some of the duties of Airport Operations Specialist.
To assume the role of Airport Maintenance Operator II, you will have the following profile:
•Knowledge of airport operations, procedures and requirements as well as all major components of an airport in order to maintain an aerodrome, ground, building, equipment, and vehicle maintenance, as well as communication and arithmetic skills, normally acquired through the attainment of a Grade 12 secondary school education and 2 years of related maintenance experience.
•Completion of other training programs as required by Canadian Aviation Regulations.
•Airport Vehicle Operator’s Permit, or ability to attain within 3 days of employment.
•Restricted Radio Telephone Operator’s Certificate.
•Valid CPR Certification and Emergency First Aid training.
•Familiarity with many regulations and guidelines, including Manual of Airport Traffic Directives, Radio Telephone Operator’s Handbook, Canadian Aviation Regulations, Airline Security Regulations, Aerodrome Standards and Recommended Practices, Canadian Aviation Security Regulations, as well as Regional policies and procedures.
•Understanding of Emergency Response Procedures and ability to assume the role of the position.
•Communication skills to respond to inquiries from tenants and members of the public, and participate as an effective team member.
•Ability to read and understand written instructions, schedules, reports, regulations, procedure manuals, operator manuals, and other related materials, read and interpret aviation weather terminology, and write maintenance and procedure reports.
•Ability to provide assistance and exchange information.
•A valid Class D driver's licence with a Z brake endorsement and an acceptable driving record, in order to operate a Regional vehicle.
•You must provide an acceptable Police Records Check in order to comply with Transport Canada requirements.
