The Manager, Safety Services leads a team of safety professionals who establish WestJet's safety management standards and coordinate and support the operation of WestJet's safety management system (SMS). The Manager, Safety Services is responsible for delivering all centralized SMS programs and for providing expertise to support company-wide compliance with applicable safety management regulations and company standards.
Specific Duties
The Manager, Safety Services responsibilities include: Lead and train a team of safety professionals to deliver consistent, high quality services; Maintain a collaborative and supportive team environment based on trust, communication and competence; Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders in developing and maintaining our industry-leading safety management system; Conduct or participate in independent safety investigations; Establish short term and long term team objectives; Manage ongoing development and review of the company safety management plan; Manage continuous improvement of the safety management system; Manage planning and delivery of the company-wide safety communication plan; Develop, document, communicate and train internal safety management processes and standards; Provide direct support to internal stakeholders to ensure WestJet's compliance with applicable safety management regulations and standards; Analyse safety information to support reactive, proactive and generative safety management activities; Produce and deliver regular and ad-hoc reports and presentations on WestJet's safety management programs; Maintain Safety Services documents and records in accordance with applicable documentation standards; and Assume the duties of the Director, Safety Services in his absence.
Manager, Safety Managment Services: leads a team of safety professionals who: Establish safety processes and standards for all applicable elements of the SMS; Provide safety training using internal or external resources; Analyse safety data and information; Provide risk management expertise; Lead safety investigations; Coordinate enterprise safety planning; Manage the company safety communication plan; Manage the company safety database; Maintain company-wide standards for safety and safety-related document management; Provide expertise in the storage, handling and transportation of dangerous goods; and Provide expertise in other disciplines relating to the safe conduct of WestJet's business.
Qualifications
Minimum five years experience in an aviation safety management system (SMS) or in a safety management role in the transportation industry; Minimum two years experience in leading, coaching and developing a team of safety professionals; Post-secondary degree in safety management or related discipline; Strong leadership skills; proven ability to lead technical experts in a collaborative, challenging high-performing team environment; Strong relationship-building skills with experience in coordinating the expectations of a diverse set of stakeholders; Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate at all levels within WestJet as well as with external stakeholders; Excellent understanding of safety management elements such as operational risk management processes, investigation practices, safety culture, human and organizational factors analysis, continuous improvement and quality management systems; Strong analytical abilities; Excellent understanding of Canadian SMS regulations and expectations; Familiarity with other safety management standards, including ICAO SARPs, IOSA and foreign SMS regulations; Intermediate to expert level of knowledge in MS Office;Demonstrated ability to learn and use specialized database applications
