Captain Luc Coates

Captain Luc Coates
This Friday afternoon Flight Operations Classes 10 and 11 were fortunate to have Catain Luc Coates from Squadron 442 in Comox, Search and Rescue, come to talk about his career in the Canadian Forces and the potential for BCIT Flight Operations students.

Captain Coates entered the Canadian Forces under the Regular Officer Training Plan, first attending Royal Military College in 2002, and graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Computer Science.

After university, he worked at the Canadian Space agency for one year in the project management department regarding microsatellites.

Captain Coates commenced pilot training on a Grob 120A in August 2007. Upon completion of phase I and II he elected to go Rotary Wing and started helicopter training on a Jet Ranger followed by the Bell 412. He received his Wings in September 2009 and got posted to 442 Sqn in Comox on the Cormorant.

Over the last 3 years, Capt Coates has flown over 1000 hours on the CH-149 Cormorant, upgraded to Aircraft Commander and completed over 55 missions.  His stories and examples were inspirational!  Thank you Captain Coates.
