Alumni Update - Wei Jin Van

The latest BCAC newsletter includes an interview with Wei Jin Van, a graduate of the Airport Operations program and current Co-Chair of the new Youth Engagement Committee. Read the excerpt below to learn more about Wei, or click here for a link to the entire newsletter.

BCAC has also started a new series featuring Members and Sponsors in the E-newsletter.  It is great way to get to know our community and possibly connect with each other in the future. If you are interested in being featured, please contact vgriffiths@bcaviationcouncil.org

Our current feature is on Wei Jin Van, Current Co-Chair of the newly formed Youth Engagement Committee, and Project Analyst at InterVISTAS.

Why did you become a member of BCAC?
I was fortunate enough to be exposed to BCAC while attending BCIT as an Airport Operations student. Through my participation in several workshops and Silver Wings banquets, I was able to re
cognize the value in a BCAC membership. The opportunities this association provides for networking, collaboration and development are invaluable to any individual or organization in the aviation industry.

When did you decide to persue a career in Aviation?
My aviation spark was ignited during my fourth year at UBC, while I was finishing my degree in Transportation & Logistics and International Business. Unsure of my post-graduation path, I signed up for a few company tours hoping to discover my “calling”. One of the visits took me to Fedex's YVR station where most students were drawn by the efficiency and precision of its operations.  I on the other hand was mesmerized by the scene across the airfield at the YVR terminal where aircraft from around the world carried passengers to and from far-reaching lands. That was the moment I said to myself “This is where I want to be.”

What are some of your goals within the Youth Engagement Committee (YEC)?
After graduation, I spent four years in Logistics before I garnered enough courage to finally chase my dreams. Through the YEC, I wish to educate the younger generation about the numerous possibilities related to aviation so they can make an informed decision regarding their careers.  Finally our work here in the YEC can bring in long-term benefits to our industry.

Why do you feel YEC is important?
As the “greying” effect becomes increasingly prominent, industries across the board will be vying for talent to fill their departing workforce. To attract and retain top level talent required for our industry, we need to connect with the younger generation to inspire, inform and facilitate their paths into aviation. YEC was started for that sole purpose.

 What's your favorite plane/airport?
As a current air service development professional and a former logistics manager, my favourite plane is the KLM MD11. A close second would be the first aircraft I ever flew in, Boeing 747-400. Favourite airport is much tougher, it would be a tie between our very own YVR and Singapore’s Changi (SIN) because they both deliver a product which is efficient, warm and unique.
