Vancouver Airport Authority has an immediate opportunity for a permanent, full-time Communications Specialist, Community Relations in the Communications Department.  We are looking for a creative, proven community relations professional excited about forging stronger relationships with the communities served by Vancouver International Airport and passionate about developing authentic and mutually beneficial connections by leveraging our engagement and investment programs.  This position reports to the Director, Corporate Communications.
Vancouver Airport Authority is a community based organization.  The Community Relations portfolio includes three key areas; Investment, Activation and Engagement.  In 2013, YVR donated over $750,000 to a number of worthy organizations, connected with over 235,000 people at community events and created numerous opportunities for engagement.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Developing and implementing a community relations strategy designed to raise the profile of YVR in the community and support the organization’s business and government relations objectives
  • With support from the broader team, developing and executing communications plans to support each community event
  • Managing and coordinating the community investment program in line with the corporation’s guidelines and developing a long-term strategy for community investment
  • Managing and organizing the Annual Public Meeting
  • Coordinating community events both onsite and offsite, and representing the Airport Authority at these events
  • Managing the annual survey program
  • Providing backup assistance to the rest of the Communications team as needed, including media relations
Key qualifications include:
  • A certificate or diploma in Communications, Community Relations, Community Consultation, Marketing, Public Relations or a related field; university degree in a related field is an asset
  • Related work experience in community relations, event planning and communications
  • Strong planning and execution skills
  • Strong communication skills for interactions with the public, media and all levels of management
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multitask in a busy work environment
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Solid analytical skills with the ability to interpret research and data gathered from surveys
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; in particular, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Proven experience with database management, analysis and reporting
  • Solid working knowledge of social media including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to deescalate when dealing with customer complaints
