The Manager, Aviation Safety (SMS) provides daily management of Safety
Department activities including the management and continuing
development/evolvement of the SMS for all Aviation business units. Ongoing
promotion and education of SMS principles, practices and initiatives for all
company staff. Ensures identified hazards and reported occurrences are
investigated, evaluated and actioned in accordance with company policies and
industry best practice. This includes:
• Monitor safety reporting data and provide regular updates on
reporting trends and statistics;
• Maintain an effective Safety Reporting system to collect, document
and evaluate all reported occurrence/hazards along with the respective
corrective action plans.
• Perform risk assessments as required by applying suitable risk
management techniques and recommend actions to reduce risks;
• Define Safety Performance Indicators to support safety goals and
objectives. Manage department activities and actions to ensure safety targets
are realized;
• Manage and coach team members and lead the department towards the
achievement of objectives. Manage direct reports;
• Oversee the investigation and corrective action processes;
• Respond to request for investigations and prepare/present reports as
required;
• Make recommendation on matters pertaining to aviation safety and SMS;
• Assess training needs based on audit review and assessment of
programs and training material;
• Provide regular contributions to Safety Department communications.
Review all department communications prior to release to ensure they are
factual, accurate and appropriate; and
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Post-secondary degree or diploma or equivalent experience in aviation
safety management;
• Industry recognized auditor or investigations training or risk
management training is preferred;
• 10 years of operational aviation experience, working specifically
with the Canadian Regulations (both fixed wing and rotor wing experience is
preferred);
• 5 years managerial experience in the development and administration
of an SMS in an aviation environment;
• Previous managerial experience with staff responsibilities and
operational oversight;
• Sound organizational and planning skills with the ability to
multi-task and effectively resolve conflicting deadlines
• Strong computer acumen (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint,
Project, Outlook ,Adobe Suite);
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills including report
preparation;
