| Overview We are currently seeking a candidate to train to become a Flight Service Specialist at the Thompson Flight Service Station. Flight Service Specialists provide timely, essential information to arriving and departing aircraft. They help pilots with runway selection for landing and taking off, provide wind and altimeter information, detailed meteorological information, and information on other aircraft traffic in the area. They also control the movement of vehicles on runways and taxiways and provide runway condition reports. The Thompson Flight Service Station also delivers remote airport advisory services for neighbouring facilities. In this unique opportunity, we are seeking an individual who resides in or around the Thompson area and wishes to continue to reside in this community. Accountabilities A Flight Service Specialist performs some or all of the following duties: Delivers services in accordance with standards and procedures; Serves as the communications link between pilots; aircraft operator companies; vehicle operators and interfacing units; and agencies including air traffic services and search and rescue; Responds to outages, emergencies and incidents to maintain operational continuity of the stations services to customers; Maintains station operational data by regular compilation of traffic and analysing operational matters; Documents occurrences, incidents, and complaints and reports exceptions to normal procedures to the Site Manager; Participates in team activities including the delivery of station-specific training; Identifies new opportunities to deliver more efficient and effective services to ensure safe and efficient provision of air navigation information services; Participates in the development and co-ordination of station documentation; Identifies and reports outages and signs of equipment-system degradation; and Coordinates with the appropriate regional or site authority to meet station and air navigation system operational needs. Education Candidates must possess a high school diploma, or equivalent. Candidates must undergo Basic Training, which will take place in Winnipeg from September 26, 2016 to mid-February 2017. In preparation for the Basic Training course, candidates must complete a pre-study package. The course is intensive, and candidates must be fully focused while in training. After candidates have successfully completed Basic Training, they will return to Thompson to complete their on the job training at the Flight Service Station. Personal Suitability Candidates must: be 18 years or older; be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; meet the medical and security requirements for this position; and be willing to temporarily relocate to Winnipeg for the duration of basic training. While a training allowance of $580 per week is paid during basic training, candidates will need to secure accommodations in Winnipeg at their own expense. Language Requirements English The successful candidate must meet the security requirement of the position and be legally able to work in Canada.
