Key Accountabilities

We are looking for a dynamic Manager, Environment Services to join the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) Environmental Services Group which provides environmental leadership to Canada’s largest airport with the goal to become the best airport in the world. This is a unique opportunity to join our team in the Airport Development and Technical Services team and ensure GTAA environmental compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, support building social license, drive the continual improvement of the airport’s environmental performance by collaborating with airport operations, Strategy/Sustainability and Corporate Communications.

  • Ensure GTAA environmental compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements by:
    • Managing a comprehensive storm water management program which includes regular monitoring and sampling
    • Work with Project Management and Engineering team to complete environmental assessments of all airport projects to determine the environmental impact of the project and to recommend mitigation measures to reduce the environmental impact
    • Maintain team readiness to respond to environmental emergencies
    • Provide oversight of audit program to ensure the environmental compliance of GTAA and tenant operations
    • Conduct regular monitoring and reporting of air quality and recommendations for improvement
    • Environmental oversight of property purchases to ensure the GTAA is not assuming additional environmental liability without knowing the environmental condition and potential remediation methods
  • Support building social license for the GTAA through:
    • Environmental leadership programs to address climate change (mitigation and adaptation), waste/resource management and maintaining a healthy environment (via clean air, water, soil)
    • Participation in community outreach and engagement initiatives
    • Drive the continual improvement of the airport’s environmental performance by collaborating with Strategy/Sustainability and Corporate Communications in the setting of corporate environmental goals, and co-development and delivery of both internal and external engagement initiatives
  • Champions awareness and engagement of GTAA business partners and tenants through
    • Compliance reporting and audits
    • Communications and outreach activities
    • Provide professional Environmental advisory services to internal business partners to ensure the continual improvement of our environmental performance in all aspects of the GTAA’s business (legal, contracting, purchasing, risk, insurance, property transfer etc.)
  • Represent the GTAA as a community leader in environment through attendance and speaking engagements, as applicable, at various events and conferences
    • Include involvement at the local, national, and international levels to track relevant emerging environmental issues
  • Manage and continually improve the ISO 14,001 Environmental Management System
  • Maintain Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) level 3 certification and collaborate with energy team to continually update long term targets
  • Lead a small technical unit within budget and aligned to the Strategic Plan
  • Oversees the YYBeeZ honeybee apiary program

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant technical field or a combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 7+ years progressive project and personnel management experience in the Environmental Compliance field
  • Good understanding of and experience working with environmental laws and regulations as applicable
  • Must demonstrate solid people leadership capabilities
  • P.Eng or working toward other relevant professional certifications such as LEED would be an asset
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a Transportation Security Clearance

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of project monitoring systems including but not limited to, scheduling, cost and change control
  • Demonstrated analytical skills in assessing and reviewing business processes to identify options, best practices and opportunities to improve service delivery
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare process documents, policies and project documents (e.g. business case, feasibility study, budget estimates, etc)
  • Ability to successfully manage and make decisions under pressure and respond to critical and or changing priorities throughout the day
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly about business goals and strategies
  • High degree of initiative and creativity
  • Ability to work effectively across a matrix environment and influence without formal authority
  • Strong facilitation and negotiation skills
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks and projects
