Commercial Manager

The General Manager, Commercial & Retail Development will execute the Commercial & Retail strategy, while, coaching and developing the team, forging new partnerships, as well as develop existing ones in order to improve the customer experience at YYC. Reporting to the Director, Commercial Development, here’s what some of your key responsibilities will be:

LEADERSHIP and BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP
  • Provide leadership, direction and support to the Retail & Commercial team. Establish performance goals with staff that align with the strategic direction of the company. Evaluate and provide feedback on the performance and development of staff.
  • Ensure strong and consistent delivery of the Commercial and Retail strategy in support of the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with the Commercial management team, and key stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Responsible for monitoring and reviewing the commercial operating budget and ensure cost conscious decisions are pro-actively taken.
  • Manage stakeholders effectively, including, internal stakeholders, and Retail/Commercial partners.
  • Oversee the development of YYC’s Retail Council (merchants’ association) and Retail partner communications overall.
  • Work closely with Commercial Marketing Manager to develop and refine Retail marketing program development.
MANAGEMENT
  • Responsible for the day to day management of retail & commercial activities at The Calgary International Airport, and acts as the landlord’s team lead for revenue and property manager to airline and other aviation air terminal service providers, air terminal space partners and retail, food & beverage, and general services concession partners.
  • Provide day-to-day commercial management expertise, leadership, direction, guidance and coordination to key project initiatives that involve multi-disciplinary partners. Ensure that retail and commercial program elements and the revenue generation components of development projects are identified and requirements are met. Recommend new, different, and/or non-traditional commercial approaches as required to continually improve the overall level of services offered to the traveling public and other users of the airport.
  • Oversee, direct and evaluate airport promotional activities to increase awareness of various market or commercial opportunities within the air terminal.
  • Develop, negotiate and keep up-to-date all retail & commercial space planning and lease documents. Ensure that all legal agreements are negotiated in good faith and with optimal revenue to the airport authority.
  • Determine, prepare and propose capital and group minor funding requirements necessary to maintain a vibrant and productive overall commercial program.
  • Develop and oversee the Commercial & Retail Development budget; ensure efficient operation of the budget within prescribed budgetary guidelines.
  • Drive Retail/Commercial revenue growth for YYC through innovation, development and negotiation of commercial agreements.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Post-secondary education in business administration; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Progressive management in a consumer-based business, sales, marketing, and/or general management experience, preferable with exposure to retail, hospitality and/or consumer goods/services.
  • Inspirational and motivational leadership skills with proven experience in aligning and developing high-performing teams.
  • Revenue management experience, with strong business acumen and an understanding of managing a P & L.
  • Exemplary experience in analytical reasoning and capacity to develop recommendations that will inform and enable executive decision-making.
  • Political and interpersonal savvy, with the capacity to establish credibility and nurture a broad range of relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Exceptional organizational skills to manage complex, diverse responsibilities and competing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.
  • Demonstrates exceptional judgment, discretion and professionalism.
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal).
  • Keen attention to detail with the ability to effectively focus on multiple projects and priorities with a calm, focused and flexible attitude and embracing change.
  • Experience in selecting and managing external vendors and key stakeholders.

THE TEAM
The Retail and Commercial Development team is responsible with leading and developing the commercial landscape at YYC. This means looking for creative new concepts to deliver the best shopping and service options at one of Canada’s busiest airports. A diverse group with a passion for delivering on the customer needs, this team is at the forefront of commercial trends, and is focused on building a holistic customer experience. As a key driver for our north star, celebrating southern Alberta hospitality will be the focus for the Retail team.
