Vancouver Airport Authority has a permanent, full-time opportunity for a Communications Specialist. Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Communications, the successful candidate will be a proven communications professional who can execute corporate communications programs and activities that support Vancouver Airport Authority’s business objectives and that target key external stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing media relations services including:
- Responding to general media requests for information and photos
- Determining media responses to contentious issues
- Coordinating media interviews with members of the Executive Committee and management team
- Preparing spokespersons for interviews
- Drafting media materials
- Pitching proactive media stories and measuring results
- Organizing media events and maintaining relationships with external agencies that may be involved
- Maintaining strong relationships with local media
- Assisting with the writing and production of editorial materials for all Airport Authority communications vehicles – internal/external/online/print and social media channels
- Developing strategic communications plans for various Airport Authority initiatives, emergency and crisis planning, and collateral materials
- Supporting community relations tactics
- Working closely with other Airport Authority departments to provide communications counsel
- Supporting the planning and execution of media, corporate and community events
- Representing the Airport Authority on industry committees and multi-agency teams
Key qualifications include:
- Completion of an undergraduate degree, or other post-secondary education, along with experience in public relations, journalism or corporate communications; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to speak, read and write Mandarin or Cantonese or Simplified Chinese an asset
- Proven ability to build relationships with internal and external customers, business partners and the media
- Demonstrated media relations experience; articulate with the ability to understand and deal confidently with the media
- Understanding of effective communications methods, including the ability to target communications to different audiences to fulfill specific purposes
- Experience with social media including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Hootsuite
- Solid organizational, planning and logistical skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Good working knowledge of MS Office Suite and Photoshop
On occasion, you will be required to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.
