Aviation Leadership Foundation Mentorship Program

Developing productive relationships, becoming engaged in positive networks, nurturing effective mentoring relationships, and building trust and reciprocity are hallmarks of strategic leadership of 21st century.

Mentoring is an essential leadership activity and be it formal or informal, organic or facilitated, mentorship has long been a vehicle for building and shaping leaders.  Mentoring initiatives can give opportunity for people to learn from one another in a meaningful way, can inspire personal mastery, and can be a rich
developmental opportunity for organizations.  Mentorship is a way to be a great leader, and to co-create great leaders.

This six-month program connects triads of aviation professionals that are at different stages of their journey and provides opportunities for participants to learn, network, build leadership skills, attend events and get connected with others in the aviation community.

Triads

"People learn best in community, when they are engaged with one another, when everyone is both student and teacher, expert and apprentice, in rich exchange of experiences and learnings" (Margaret Wheatley, 2007).  Mentoring is closely connected with personal and organizational learning, and is a natural
part of leadership.

This initiative breaks out of the traditional notion of mentoring.   The Triad concept deliberately resists hierarchy and embraces the Aviation Leadership Foundation vision that there is ‘A Leader in Every Chair’.  Everyone wants to connect, everyone has something to learn, everyone has something contribute, and everyone has experiences/stories to share. The triad forms a circle and the circle represents interconnectedness, equality, and continuity.  Circles suggest inclusiveness and collaborative learning.  The triad also forms a triangle, with each log of the structure responsible for the quality of the relationship between the other two parts.  Those who approach their mentoring relationships with purpose and an open mind will benefit from the insight and life experience of the others.  Triads are formed with one Youth Leader, one Emerging Leader and one Community Leader.  Youth Leaders are leaders embarking on an aviation career, Emerging Leaders are mid career professionals , and Community Leaders are established leaders in the aviation community.
