The Department of Transportation and Works is responsible for the administration, supervision, control, regulation, management and direction of all matters relating to transportation and public works. As such, the Department oversees the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers; and construction and management of provincial government buildings. The vision of the Department of Transportation and Works is of safe, reliable and sustainable transportation and public works infrastructure and services, demonstrating a commitment to service excellence in supporting the social and economic needs of Newfoundland and Labrador. 

Duties 
Work involves responsibility for performing daily safety checks and maintenance inspections of airstrip surface, lights, markers, building, security, and supplies. The incumbent is also responsible for taking charge of the overall coordination of the emergency operations at the scene as the on-scene controller. Other responsibilities include routine daily maintenance on equipment and maintaining accurate documentation of activities at the airport and maintenance records; maintain airport surfaces; snow plowing, snow removal and grading gravel runways and immediately advising the supervisor of any conditions which may adversely affect the operation of aircrafts. The incumbent is expected to attend landings and takeoffs of aircraft. Other duties as assigned. 

Screening Criteria 
  • Experience in operation of heavy equipment 
  • Experience in minor repairs to heavy equipment 
  • Experience in operating an airstrip (asset) 
  • Completion of the High School Education (equivalencies will be considered) 
  • Possession of Driver’s License 05 license with 08, 09 and 09A endorsements 
  • Clearly demonstrate the ability to report within one half hour of notification of after-duty call 
Assessment Criteria 
  • Knowledge of maintenance and practices utilized in the operation of heavy equipment 
  • Knowledge of the safety regulations utilized in the operation of heavy equipment 
  • Knowledge in operating an airstrip (asset) 
  • Ability to make decisions 
  • Ability to manage time and tasks 
  • Ability to communicate (verbal) 
  • Heavy equipment operating skills 
  • Work independently 

Conditions of Employment - Conditions of Offer 

  • Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 license with 08, 09 and 09A endorsements 
  • Recent and satisfactory driver’s abstract is required 
  • Conditions of Acceptance
