PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Leismer Aerodrome Limited owns & operates the Conklin Leismer Aerodrome. The Aerodrome Operations Department has the responsibility to ensure that the Aerodrome facilities are in place to meet the demand of the air industry and that the Aerodrome is operated according to LAL, Federal and Provincial regulations, standards and recommended practices.
The Aerodrome Operations Specialist contributes to the safe and reliable operation of the Aerodrome and the safe passage of all persons and aircrafts utilizing the aerodrome by maintaining the Aerodrome surfaces and buildings. This includes clearing and maintaining buildings, runways, taxiways, aprons and roads, drainage systems, security fencing, water/sewer systems and minor maintenance of equipment.
The Aerodrome Operations Specialist communicate on VHF & UHF radios while performing airfield maintenance duties to ensure that maintenance continue with minimum interruption of air traffic.
The Aerodrome Operations Specialist also assists with the loading and unloading of aircrafts, this includes; passengers, luggage and freight along with aircraft servicing which includes; lav-carts, water carts and de-ice vehicles.

SCOPE
This position is located at the Conklin Leismer Aerodrome and reports to the Aerodrome Manager.
The Aerodrome Operations Specialist maintains all Aerodrome surfaces, including runways, taxiways, aprons and roadways, with a combined surface area of 4 square miles. The duties of the Aerodrome Operations Specialist include winter snow removal; runway surface condition reporting, roadway and drainage ditch grading, asphalt crack sealing, line painting, aircraft serving and providing emergency response services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintains and improves the condition of the Aerodrome surfaces, including runways, taxiways, aprons and roads, drainage systems and security fencing, in compliance with the standards of Transport Canada, to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the Aerodrome and the safe passage of the travelling public along with providing emergency response services.
Winter Maintenance
Main activities:
  • Removes snow and ice from the apron, taxiways, runways, public access roads, parking areas, meteorological and telecommunication sites and other airfield/Aerodrome surfaces.
  • Uses ice control chemicals.
  • Provides Canadian Runway Friction Index (CRFI) and publishes NOTAMs.
  • Operates specialized heavy equipment, including industrial snow blowers, snow plows, sweepers, graders, gravel trucks, loaders, back hoes, crawlers, trenchers, tractors, mowers and rollers.
  • Maintains an adequate supply of materials, parts and equipment.
  • Reports on Runway Surface Condition and Foreign Object Damage.
  • Aircraft Deicing
  • Aircraft Marshalling
  • Aircraft Refueling
  • Loading & Unloading of Aircrafts (Passengers & Luggage)
  • Providing Emergency Response Services
  • Along with other related duties.
Summer Maintenance
Main activities:
  • Reports on Runway Surface Conditions and Foreign Object Damage.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs fencing and signage.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs storm drainage systems.
  • Identifies unsafe Aerodrome surfaces requiring maintenance.
  • Maintains all paved aircraft movement surfaces and roadways by applying crack sealing and jet sealants.
  • Paints all airside runways, taxiways, ramp areas and road surfaces with centre lines, hold pattern lines and numbers
  • Performs bird and mammal control to prevent damage to aircraft.
  • Provides surface maintenance and vegetation control.
  • Performs landscaping, determining grades, slopes, seeding, turf maintenance, drainage and ditches.
  • Advises the Supervisor of materials required for pavement maintenance.
  • Identifies repairs to winter heavy equipment to be scheduled for summer maintenance.

  • Providing Emergency Response Services
Performs preventative maintenance.
Main activities:
  • Checks mobile equipment prior to use
  • Records and reports equipment, facility and system deficiencies
  • Maintains all required records
  • Performs minor repairs and assists mechanic to perform major repairs
  • Services heavy equipment (oiling and greasing)
  • Monitors mobile equipment performance during operations and maintains equipment operations records
  • Keeps the Aerodrome in a safe state and clean appearance
  • Provides Aerodrome and airfield maintenance assistance at remote sites, as and when required.
Assists in the general maintenance program.
Main activities:
  • Assists mechanics in servicing or replacing of parts on heavy equipment
  • Assists with installing airfield lighting systems and replaces airfield lighting system lamps, fixtures, windsocks and markers
  • Assists other contractors and other personnel
  • Assists with Aerodrome security measures during emergencies
  • Monitors airside security
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Requires thorough knowledge of Aerodrome operations and procedures for maintenance of Aerodrome facilities, such as snow and ice control. This knowledge is obtained through the mandatory Airfield Maintenance Training, which takes one to two years to complete. Prior education should be at grade 12 level.
In addition to the above specific training, position requires the following:

- Class 3 driver's licence (Airbrake)
- Restricted Radio Operator's licence
- Airside vehicle operator's licence
- Fall Arrest
- WHMIS certification
- First aid and CPR certification
- Aircraft Deicing
- Aircraft Refueling
- Fire Fighting (NFPA 1001/1002/1003 or CARS 303/323)
Position requires knowledge of runway conditions under all types of weather, such as snow, ice, rain, freezing rain, and frost.
Position requires extensive experience in the use of heavy equipment and emergency response equipment. In addition, organizational and administrative skills are required.
Incumbent is required to be skilled and proficient in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Position requires the ability to prioritise work and to work independently
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands
Incumbent is frequently exposed to physical demands, including lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, bending and working in awkward positions. This is required in the following activities:
- Shovelling snow, clearing around lights, signs, gates, obstructions, etc.
- Digging ditches and trenches
- Lifting and dumping ice control chemicals into trucks
- Re-bristling runway sweepers
- Hooking up runway sweepers to trucks
- Filling, carrying and stacking sand bags
- Brush cutting and rock picking
- Loading & unloading of aircrafts
- Responding to Emergencies
