WHAT YOU WILL DO
This new intermediate level position sits within the Compliance and Safety team. The Safety Specialist’s will oversee the Authority’s day of response to the workplace and contractor safety programs including loss control, incident investigation, safety management trend analysis and other related activities.


Occupational Health & Safety:
Reporting to the Manager, Safety, the primary focus of this role is to support the team and workplace safety for the Airport Authority staff. You will be involved with airport security, public safety, construction safety, and contractor safety.

The key duties of this role are:
  • Deliver the health and safety program
  • Operational / field focused
  • Supporting the Compliance and Safety Team / Divisions as a subject matter expert
  • Strong focus on delivering safety initiatives, regulatory compliance, risk / hazard assessments, COR Program, inspections and Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committee

Contractor Management Safety:
Reporting to the Manager, Contractor Safety, the primary focus of this role is to support the delivery of the contractor safety programs.

The key duties of this role are:
  • Delivering the Contractor Safety Management Program
  • Operational / field focused
  • Supporting the Compliance and Safety Team / Contractors as a subject matter expert
  • Strong focus on delivering Contractor Management initiatives, Inspection of contractors’ work area, building relationships with, regulatory compliance, Contractor Forums, Contractor Management Systems and Contractor performance management.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Post-secondary education (degree or equivalent) in safety, or similar and/or professional equivalent experience
  • Certified Occupational Health & Safety Practitioner or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or working towards
  • CRSP Canadian Registered Safety Professional or working toward designation or similar designation (e.g. CSP)
  • Experience in occupational health and safety (e.g. ergonomics; industrial hygiene; job safety analysis; hazard identification/control; audit, workplace inspections; accident investigations)
  • Experience managing contractors in a busy environment
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Working knowledge of both federal and provincial safety legislations and Canada Labour Codes as they relate to workplace health and contractor safety
  • Working knowledge of construction related safety practices and guidelines, building codes, related to hazardous building materials. (Asbestos and Mould management)
  • Ability to effectively build and maintain relationships and trust with multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, integrity, confidentiality and ethics
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, Power Point
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License or equivalent, subject to a clean driver’s abstract
  • Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of a Safety Sensitive position, this includes pre-employment medical assessment and Drug & Alcohol testing
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC)

WHAT ELSE?
  • 5+ years’ experience as a specialist managing a workplace safety program and/or experience with workplace legislative compliance under federal or provincial codes
  • Experience and or certification as an auditor and or ergonomist
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations that pertain to the storage, use and emergency response of hazardous materials in the workplace
