Key Accountabilities

Reporting to the Manager, Architectural Services, the Technologist, Architectural provides various technical support in the development of capital and recurring projects from Initiation phase, Definition phase, Approval phase, Implementation phase, to the Commissioning, Occupancy and Acceptance phase. Projects include renovations and new construction of various GTAA facilities including air terminals, parking structures, office buildings, hangars, cargo, maintenance, transit stations and other service buildings.

  • Assisting in the architectural design and construction of projects identified to Architectural Services by preparing preliminary design concepts, surveying and analyzing existing building conditions, recording observations, preparing final designs, construction drawings and documents for GTAA clients and Project Managers
  • Coordination with external consultants and reviewing consultant submissions
  • Prepare preliminary budget and/or cost estimates and schedules based on final design drawings prepared through consultation with various GTAA staff and other stakeholders
  • Prepare reports and other correspondence for review
  • Prepare final design drawings, construction drawings and specifications for GTAA clients and Project Managers based on previous design approval, ensuring that project objectives and performance standard are in compliance with client requirements and established design and technical requirements
  • Meet with GTAA clients and Project Managers in assisting the Senior Architect, Architectural Services to identify and define design parameters for approved projects which require architectural input/services
  • Consult with various GTAA staff and other stakeholders in the determination of optimum designs
  • Conduct on-site review and as built measurements to carry out preliminary design concept presentations
  • Provides various technical supports in the development of capital and recurring projects from Initiation phase, definition phase, approval phase, implementation phase to the commissioning, occupancy and acceptance phase and provide technical support during the initiation phase which involves the preliminary evaluation of the problem/project, opportunity or need
  • Review other contract documents, including those prepared by consultants, to ensure completeness and conformance with policies, procedures, guidelines, GTAA standards and directives
  • Participation in Facilities Alteration Approval Process as requested
  • Participates in the periodic review of Final Acceptance phase of construction
  • Advise on issues related to planning, engineering, maintenance and operation of GTAA’s facility asset management system
This unionized position is classified at the Band 6 level, with an hourly wage range of $34.93 to $38.43, based on a 37.5 hour work week. The successful candidate must be available to commence the duties of the position once a selection decision has been made. A written test will be administered as a part of the competitive process.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a post-secondary diploma or degree in Architecture or diploma in Architectural Technology or equivalent educational experience
  • Must be eligible to become a member of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) and/or Member of the Ontario Association of Applied Architectural Sciences (OAAAS)
  • Possess three to five (3-5) years of combined experience in architectural planning and design, interior design, and preparation of contract documents
  • Experience in project management, contract administration, directing consultants and contractors and staff relations would be an asset
  • Experience with projects of a complex nature involving additions, alterations, renovation work and building maintenance would be an asset
  • LEED certification would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Planning experience would be considered an asset
  • Must have a fully satisfactory work performance in his/her current position and a work record that is void of discipline and unacceptable attendance that would have a bearing on the duties, roles and responsibilities of the posted position
  • Must be able to obtain and retain Transportation Security Clearance at the designated level for the position

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of architectural practices, site measurements, as-built techniques principles and practices and building science/systems
  • Knowledge of National and Provincial Building Codes, Municipal and other technical guidelines, standards and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Airport operations and their interaction with major capital projects
  • Knowledge of project management principles and practices
  • Knowledge of construction activities, specifications, trends and developments in the use of material and construction techniques
  • Knowledge of ‘green’ buildings and ‘smart’ buildings concepts and principles.
  • Knowledge of computer software operations. (MS Office and CAD based programs)
  • Ability to review comprehensive construction documents and technical knowledge to make cost effective modifications.
  • Ability to creatively plan and design space to solve user needs with efficient use of budget in conjunction with strong technical skills in construction techniques and methods
  • Interpersonal skills in order to discuss architectural issues with GTAA clients and staff of other organizations; and the ability to ensure client requirements are met and develop innovative designs to meet a variety of operational needs
  • Superior communications skills (oral, written, listening) and excellent interpersonal skills are essential
