The Organization
The Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) is a community-based, non-share capital corporation that operates, manages, maintains and invests in the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and affiliate businesses. Operating on a multi-site property, the WAA is responsible for airport operations, security, facilities, parking, ground transportation and communications.
With an ever-expanding airport campus, WAA is a critical player in the development of one of Canada’s strategic transportation hubs.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Fire Captain and the Manager, Environment and ERS, the Firefighter is responsible for firefighting, rescue and first aid response to a medical emergency and other related services involving considerable hazards. Firefighters at WAA are highly motivated, self-starting individuals who can work independently and within a team.



Responsibilities include:
  • Provide rapid, efficient and safe escape routes for the evacuation of passengers, crew and other people during emergency situations;
  • First aid response to a medical emergency;
  • Initiate fire suppression activities and assist in evacuation and rescue duties during structural fires;
  • Active participation in on-going fire fighting training program;
  • Carry out fire prevention and safety activities;
  • Wildlife hazard management;
  • Routine maintenance of fire fighting and rescue equipment; and
  • Other related duties.
Selection Criteria include:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent;
  • Completion of NFPA 1001 Level I & II and/or Current CARS Certification to 323.14;
  • NFPA 472 Ops;
  • Minimum valid SFA/CPR Level C and AED (Emergency Medical Responder preferred);
  • Must work shift work;
  • Ability to obtain an Airport Vehicle Operator’s Permit and restricted radio/telephone licence;
  • The applicant must complete a Physical ability fitness test and FF Medical Assessment;
  • Strong computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint);
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Demonstrated ability to react quickly and remain calm under stressful situations;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills;
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently;
  • Must obtain a valid Class 3 driver’s licence with air brake endorsement within 90 days of hire;
  • Driving abstract demonstrating responsible and safe driving record;
  • Airport-related experience would be considered an asset;
  • Preference will be given to candidates with firefighting experience and/or emergency procedures training;
  • Possession and Acquisition License and wildlife management experience would be considered an asset.
Condition of employment is the ability to obtain and maintain an Airport Restricted Area Identification Card.
