Routes 2010

This was the first year the World Air Development forum, Routes 2010, has been held in Vancouver and over 2,800 delegates came from Europe, Asia and the USA to attend.  This forum provides a venue for air carriers and airports from around the world to meet in one location to discuss and negotiate new routes.

In addition to the “speed dating” aspect of the forum, guest speakers provided training and discussion on their perspectives of the aviation industry. Trends, opportunities and challenges facing the aviation industry were provided by noted industry experts. Seminar topics included:

 • Winning strategies for Route Development
• Opportunities and Challenges in the Global Aviation Industry
• How YVR Welcomed the World to the 2010 Games
• How to Successfully Deliver a Business Plan
• The Future of Hub Networks
• Training for Success

Guests, speakers and delegates began arriving on September 16, 17, 18 &; 19, and began returning to their home bases on the 19th and 20th, so volunteers were required to assist with way finding between Waterfront Station, the Convention Centre and various hotels in the downtown core, which BCIT students were pleased to assist with.  YVR, the host airport for the event, offered to sponsor a booth along with delegate passes for five instructors and a further 10 students who had just completed “Aviation Marketing”. The delegate passes offered complete access to all 185 trade-fair booths, refreshments and attendance at the seminars and speaker events. Student volunteers who were not included in the delegation were given limited access passes, which enabled them to visit the booths and seminars on a limited basis.

We would like to thank YVR for their generous support of the Aviation Operations programs!  This opportunity was provided wonderful learning opportunities for the instructors and students alike.  We would also like to thank the 31 student volunteers who helped to make this event a huge success through their efforts.
