Personal Emergency Preparedness

Due to wide-spread emergencies caused by events like earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand, Haiti, and Chile, BCIT is encouraging faculty, staff, and students to examine personal preparedness at home. Because we live in an earthquake region, a large magnitude earthquake could hit at any time and we must be prepared.

Preparing for a disaster takes time and effort. Planning is essential so that you can:
• Avoid injury and help others
• Minimize damage to your property
• Survive at least 72 hours post disaster in your home or workplace without immediate help from emergency response officials

When disaster strikes, the ability to act immediately is essential. To aid in survival, you and members of your family/household should prepare personal and family survival plans and kits. Learn more by visiting:

In the workplace, everyone should have a ‘Grab & Go Kit’ under their desk. For further information including a list of what you need for survival kits in your office, classroom, laboratory, etc., please see http://www.bcit.ca/safetyandsecurity/emergency/emergencyguide.shtml
