New Posting - Abbottsford Airport (Airport Operations Specialist)

We are currently offering an excellent opportunity at the Abbotsford International Airport, for a dynamic, self motivated individual with proven skills, knowledge and abilities as an Airport Operations Specialist.

1. NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK

This is a skilled position requiring a high degree of technical knowledge to respond to aircraft and other emergencies; perform groundside, airside, and building maintenance of the airfield and airport facilities; and ensure safe, secure and efficient airport operations in accordance with the Airport’s Safety Management System (SMS).

The incumbent exercises independence of judgement upon receiving verbal or written assignments from the Duty Officer, and organizes work in order to meet priorities. The incumbent works within the Abbotsford Airport guidelines and budgetary limits referring complex matters to the Duty Officer.




2. ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Performs a variety of activities which are required to maintain the safe operational status of airport facilities and equipment in accordance with the Airport Safety Management System. This involves conducting airfield, terminal complex, and groundside inspections to ensure that operations are in compliance with all applicable regulations, plans and procedures, documenting deficiencies, and taking corrective action as necessary.
 
Implements active preventative maintenance program for airport facilities, including airfield, terminal complex, mobile fleet, buildings and groundside areas; conducts scheduled inspections to verify facility and equipment condition, operation and serviceability; identifies and documents deficiencies; takes immediate corrective action to resolve minor deficiencies; files reports requesting follow-up action for more serious deficiencies; follows up to ensure that corrective action has been taken and documented; calls in contractor/consultant as required.
Provides aircraft rescue firefighting duties in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).
Monitors multiple radio frequencies and telephone communications within the Operations Room; dispatches and/or takes actions on requests and concerns.
Completes documentation on emergency calls, including relevant details, such as weather, ground conditions, and other pertinent information.
Monitors terminal operations to ensure that a high level of customer service, safety and security is maintained.
Operates a variety of light to heavy/specialized equipment to maintain safe runways, taxiways and other airside and groundside surfaces, including snow removal and the application of ice control chemicals.
Performs landscape maintenance, wildlife control, litter pick-up, general clean-up, and other manual work functions.
Performs basic building maintenance work (such as plumbing, HVAC, painting, carpentry, etc.) as required.
May be required to determine the need for supplemental equipment and resources.
Performs other related duties as required.

3. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  • Working knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations, and standards; Airport plans, directives and procedures; and City policies with respect to airport safety, operations, maintenance, and emergency response.

  • Ability to operate light to heavy/specialized equipment.Ability to apply sound judgment in selecting an appropriate course of action in both day-to-day and emergency operations.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and solve technical or operational problems.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to implement Airport Operational Guidelines and Plans.
  • Thorough knowledge of emergency response, including the skills and training to meet the requirements of Canadian Aviation Regulations for delivery of the airport firefighting function.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding of airport emergency procedures.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with and maintain effective relationships with Airport and City staff, agencies, Airport tenants, and contractors, and the ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the general public.
4. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Minimum two years’ current airside operation experience.
  • Minimum one year construction/trades experience.
5. REQUIRED LICENCES and CERTIFICATES
  • CARs 303 and 323 training and qualification requirements related to Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF)
  • Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 3, with Air
  • Restricted Radio Operators License
  • Basic First Aid with CPR
  • Ability to obtain an Airside Vehicle Operating Permit
  • Ability to obtain Restricted Area Pass

Compensation and Benefits :   We offer a comprehensive, competitive compensation and benefits program to our employees. This position is paid hourly from $25.89 - $30.46 (2011 rates).
