Position Overview
The Victoria Airport Authority (VAA) manages and operates the Victoria International Airport, which is the 10th busiest airport in Canada. The VAA is seeking an enthusiastic Equipment Operator 2 to perform a variety of tasks for the upkeep and maintenance of groundside and airside operations during the summer season.
Summer season can include standby time, after hour’s callouts, shift work and varying hours of operations. The Equipment Operator is a union position reporting to the Field Supervisor and will normally work a 40 hour work week.
Education & Experience
Minimum completion of Grade12 and at least three years’ experience with grounds maintenance using heavy equipment and snow removal.
BC Class 3 Driver’s licence with air brakes endorsement is required.
Within three (3) months of hire, the Equipment Operator 2 must obtain the following certifications: Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP) and Radio Operator’s Certificate – Aeronautical.
If required, within six (6) months of hire, the Equipment Operator 2 must also obtain the following certifications: Pesticide Applicator Certificate, Firearms Certification (FAC) and WHMIS certification.
Knowledge
Knowledge of safe operation of tools and heavy duty equipment.
Knowledge of pavement maintenance requirements and inspection procedures.
Proficiency in the English language, both spoken and written.
Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of commonlyused software programs.
Abilities
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, with internal and external customers.
Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgment, and work as a positive and collaborative team member at all times.
Organization skills with the ability to work under deadlines and conflicting demands.
Ability to use various software packages and willingness to learn new technology.
Enthusiastic, energetic, and the ability to be a self-starter and work independently.
Fully qualified to operate heavy duty equipment and tools,
Personal suitability to work in emergency, hazardous (i.e. confined space, heights) or inclement weather situations
Ability to work long periods of time doing physical labour and lift over 40 pounds on occasion. Duties Provide general labour for Airport operations.
Utilize power equipment to perform a variety of maintenance duties
