New Posting - Vancouver Airport Authority

The Vancouver Airport Authority has an opportunity for a permanent, full-time Heavy Duty Mechanic in the Maintenance Services Department.  

Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance Services, and working as part of a multi-trade crew, the successful candidate will ensure that YVR generator fleet and mobile equipment are in compliance with applicable codes, life safety and Airport Authority standards.


Key responsibilities include: 

  • Maintaining and repairing diesel generator sets and other mobile equipment
  • Diagnosing faults or malfunctions using computerized and other testing equipment to determine extent of repair required
  • Adjusting equipment and repairing or replacing defective parts, components or systems, using hand and power tools
  • Testing repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure that work meets manufacturers' specifications
  • Cleaning, lubricating and performing other routine inspections and maintenance work on equipment
  • Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) and annunciator panels
  • Performing load testing on units to identify possible problems and prevent wet stacking
  • Rebuilding and repairing turbochargers, head gaskets, seals, water pumps; torque heads, belts and hoses
  • Conducting automatic and manual transfer tests of simulated power outages to ensure generators are functioning properly
  • Testing batteries, fuel coolant, and oil; ship oil samples for analysis
  • Transporting and disposing hazardous materials
  • Interpreting technical manuals relating to manufacturer specifications and warranty requirements
  • Keeping records of inspections and service work performed
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work of the trade
  • Performing all aspects of preventative maintenance on Airport Authority buildings and assets
  • BC Trade Qualification as a Heavy Duty Mechanic; preference will be given to persons with dual ticketed trades
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, as well as independently, with little supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to make safety a top priority
  • Valid BC driver’s license

Key qualifications include:
Shift work is required as the Maintenance Department operates on a 24-hour basis.
