SENIOR MANAGER, COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA RELATIONS ** 1 YEAR CONTRACT **
Reporting to the Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, the Senior Manager, Communications and Media Relations (1 Year Contract Position) is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of strategic communications plans, including media relations and public relations campaigns and for cultivating and managing relations internally and externally with media and the community.
Some of the key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Working in collaboration with senior management and other key stakeholders in the organization to support the company’s strategic and operational priorities through the development of a comprehensive communications plan, including media relations and public relations campaigns;
- Create and execute proactive media relations plans in alignment with the goals and objectives of the organization;
- Assist in the direction and execution of communications and PR campaigns and events across all channels including print, web, social media, broadcast and events;
- Plan, develop and implement communications and PR activities to proactively promote the brand, reputation and key business objectives;
- Manage special events such as Sail-in Cinema;
- Cultivate and enhance collaborative working relationships within the media including national and regional press contacts and bloggers/social media influencers;
- Detect public relations issues as they emerge and effectively addresses them;
- Plan and oversee press and other events where media may attend;
- Support the monitoring and planning of social media strategies and oversee execution;
- Manage events and high-profile projects for the organization and its operations;
- Support the management of corporate communications associated with the Annual General Meeting, Sustainability Report and Annual Report;
- Champion and communicate PortsToronto’s sustainability program and environmental efforts;
- Manage internal communications and stakeholder communications;
- Support reputational and operational crisis/issues management by ensuring proper, coordinated and consistent messaging aligned to the company;
- Support the development of organizational crisis communications plans;
- Proactively seek out and plan/implement communications strategies to win awards of recognition for PortsToronto;
- Research, write and edit a wide variety of internal and external communications materials; produce and develop materials for issues and media management; compose and edit company literature and articles for internal and external use;
- Act as a media spokesperson, as required, on behalf of the company and address questions and concerns;
- Manage all relationship internally and externally with tact and diplomacy;
- Manage a team of two employees
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary education with a Degree in Business Communications, Public/Media Relations or equivalent.
- Minimum 8 – 10 years’ experience working in a communications and/or media relations role; brand management experience an asset
- Excellent media contacts in Toronto and at the national level
- Experience assisting in the development of a comprehensive communications plan and media relations and PR campaigns
- Solid knowledge of print, web, social media and broadcast channels
- Experience developing media campaigns and in dealing with the media and public community including national and regional press
- Solid communication skills including exceptional writing skills, well-honed presentation skills, strong researching ability, exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, exceptional command of the English language, professional demeanor
- Exceptional interpersonal skills to effectively source information, obtain approvals, build relationships and provide sufficient influence to achieve successful outcomes
- Creative problem solver and strategic thinker with a strong work ethic
- Highly organized, able to prioritize multiple projects effectively and work independently in a fast-paced environment; team player who works well in a multi-functional team
- Solid leadership ability managing, coaching and developing direct reports
- Strong event, project and budget management skills
- Proficient computer skills with Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, Power Point)
- Bilingual in French is a great asset
